The Chevy Volt

Published almost 3 years ago

GM has been issuing news releases lately about how the Chevy Volt will achieve a 230 MPG rating from the EPA. Not bad at all!

I believe that the Volt will sell very well; many drivers only need to run errands around town and will not be hindered by the distance limitations of the Volt. "Being green" is "in", as well as US energy independence and thriftiness.

But what took so long? Does it have something to do with being "too big to fail"? I wonder. Because maybe it takes behemoth and established companies like this to accomplish these types of feat:

These changes represent quantum leaps as far as consumer product and service values go. The disruptions are grand, but how are they embraced by the consumer? In both cases, the answer seems to be "slowly".

I guess that's what I'm really wondering about. Is the mass-market able to accept a new, better product from a new company? I'd like to thing it can, but I'm not sure. Its a topic I often wonder about - how big a deal is it to communicate in an effective and productive way to the great majority of human beings on the earth? In the past, I believe the task was gargantuan. Nowadays, I'm not so sure its a task which can be consciously achieved. The willingness of people to pay attention to a message seems to hinge upon many new factors, several of which are out of the speakers' control. This, I think, is a good thing. The buzz words like "hive minds" and "group think" are becoming a reality as our world becomes a global village. As a Luke Vibert song once sampled, (paraphrased) "I had a dream where the world was one big family, like our family". OK, a little off topic there!

I guess we'll get to witness this event horizon when the first mass-market fully electric car is available and consumed. Will it be from Tesla or from GM?
