Check Engine Light my @#$%

Published over 3 years ago

Well I'm a little frustrated because my check engine light came on about a week ago. Obviously this gets me worried so I get my car into the shop asap only for them to tell me that it was because my gas cap wasn't screwed on all of the way. Ninety nine dollars just for them to look at it and tell me that. Give me a break.

I assumed the check engine light, meant CHECK THE ENGINE because there's something wrong with it. Next car better have a check gas cap light.

At least you'll never make that mistake again!

I was told years ago by a mechanic that generally the check engine light is usually not for major engine issues. But does cost lots to diagnose why the light came on. At the time I had a Honda Prelude, back in the early 90's and the check engine light came on. And like you I spent a bunch of money to find out that it needed a new filter and that was schedule to be replaced at the next check up anyway. Ugh. The guy was fairly honest (for a change!) and said the majority of the time its fairly minor stuff but it gets people to the garages pronto.
