~70MPG Diesel?

Published about 4 years ago

I found this link thanks to Planet Debian:

It is a Wired article about an upcoming Volkswagen Golf hybrid vehicle which will get almost 70 miles per gallon. Not bad - though it won't be available in the United States at first (or ever?).

Ugh- its so frustrating how many diesel cars are unavailable in the states. There are even US cars that are diesel available only overseas.

It's a pity that car companies are so focussed on improving efficiency of small cars. While it's great to have an efficient VW Golf, an efficient Bora/Jetta or Passat would interest more people. Given your recent post about a baby seat, it seems that a Passat would be a better VW for you as it has more room in the back seat. Two baby seats fit nicely in the back of a Passat, I doubt that the same could be said about the hypothetical hybrid Golf.

In Australia if they were to make marginal improvements to the efficiency of the Ford Falcon and Holden (GM) Commodore then more fuel would be saved than by all the Priuses. It should be noted that the Toyota Camry is a competitor to the Falcon and Commodore which uses less fuel.

You're right - we actually bought a Toyota RAV4 last year with the baby in mind:

I like small cars for many reasons, but for just as many if not more reasons, they aren't especially practical for many people.

FYI - I've heard that the Toyota Camry is the most popular selling vehicle in the US, and the Corolla is the most popular selling car in the world.
