Smart USA

Smart cars are on their way to the USA in 2008! This is pretty cool, smart cars are small, fuel-efficient, cost effective vehicles.
I was just looking over their FAQ, and they list the miles per gallon at 40, which in my opinion isn't that great for such a small car. My Toyota Corolla gets close to that, has four doors, and a pretty good sized trunk.
The smart car would no doubt be easier to park though.
Russell Coker says:
Smart cars are designed for lower speeds. I have a suspicion that if you tested a Smart car vs a Corolla exclusively on back streets at low speeds then the Smart car would look a lot better.
I expect that the US is similar to Australia in having federally mandated standards for measuring fuel efficiency which include some highway driving.
The idea of driving a Smart car on a highway scares me. Such cars obviously aren't designed for that.
