Pumping Google Maps
Published over 4 years ago
Now this is a great idea! News outlets across the internet are reporting that Google has teamed up with a gasoline retailer to install Google Maps service on gasoline pumps, so you can find your way while filling up.
A couple of questions:
- I assume they've assured that you can't generate static electricity by using the maps, which sometime happens when people use their cellphones while pumping gas and can cause gas vapors to ignite.
- Will you be able to pay for your gas using Google checkout too?
What do you think?

The above page debunks the myth that you can ignite petrol vapour with a mobile phone. MythBusters tried really hard to reproduce this and were unable to do so.
Static electricity does not come from electrical devices, it is generated by certain materials (most commonly plastic, but fur will also do) and causes the biggest spark when connecting to something that is earthed (a petrol pump being electric should be earthed).
The problem with static electricity is linked to petrol pumps that keep working when the user takes their hand off the hose. That allows the user to get a charge up and then discharge it with a spark when they touch the metal nozzle of the hose again.
Please update your post to avoid spreading the myth.
