Highway Drainage Grate Flies Through Air and Strikes Car and Driver

Published almost 5 years ago

This morning on route 128 (also known as interstate 95) in Westwood, Massachusetts, a tractor trailer drove over a loose drainage gate, flipping it into the air where it collided with a Toyota Corolla. The grate smashed through the windshield and struck the hand and head of the driver, critically injuring him.

This is the second serious accident caused by human error on Massachusetts roadways in recent months. The first one was caused by a collapsed ceiling panel in the Ted Williams extension tunnel and killed a woman from Jamaica Plain.

I'm really saddened by these events and wish that our roadways were safer. This is an incredible important issue that I've ignored in the past but would like to pay closer attention to from now on. If you don't drive carefully, please start doing so immediately! It was for reasons like this that I installed a speakerphone system for my cellular phone so that I won't have to use the handset while driving. Any distraction could cause a disaster, and I unfortunately get distracted easily.
