2005 Toyota Corolla Fusebox Photographs and Access Information

Published almost 5 years ago

In the 2005 Toyota Corolla, there are two fuse panels. One is easily accessible from under the hood, it is on the driver's side close to the windshield.

The other one is under the steering wheel and is very hard to get to. Strangely, this has the fuses which in my mind would be more likely to blow, like the 12-volt power outlet, formerly known as the cigarette lighter.

Over the last week, I managed to blow two fuses with an el-cheapo power inverter, which I use to charge my laptop and cell phone when I'm on the road.

Culprit fuses

Toyota supplies a few spare fuses, but since I had blown two of the same wattage, I was short one. I plucked the second one out of the fog light spot, thinking that since I don't have fog lights, it won't be missed. Hopefully that is the case. I'll have to watch out to see if anything isn't working over the next few days.

Thanks!

how do you get to see the box under the instrument panel? Can it be dropped down?

frustrated

Albert says:

Hi Jack, You are referring to the box under the steering wheel when you say instrument panel right?

I positioned myself upside down in the driver's seat, then looked up, saw the box, and then took the top off to see the fuses.

Are you able to see the box, just not able to get the cover off?

Abhi says:

Alberton, Thanks for info.I am havin the same problem,I mean to check the fuse of A/c underneath steering wheel.

How to open that cover below the steering wheel, to check the fuse.

Thanks

will says:

yes i install car audio and i used to have a few amps hooked up in my 05 carolla and i recently bought a 2000 watt lanzar amplifier and the remote will not turn the amp on. it works fine in my truck but in the carolla i get extra wire stick in the 12v wire and it makes my speakers make a wierd vibrating noise so does anyone have any solutions please?

Jose de la Maza says:

Hello there! I just couldn´t find the fuse box under the steering wheel, until I found your article and report. Even after reading your article I tried two times to see the box, unsuccessfully.

You need to be a child to enter there, but you need to have electricity knowledge too! Impossible!

Frankly speaking, a stupid place they chose. It was difficult to enter there but was almost impossible read and almost impossible get out!

How to you open the box, by the way?

Thank you so much,

Jose

Chile

Albert says:

Hi Jose, I think its a clip on cover, so I just used my finger to lift the clasp and pull it down. Good luck!

Anas says:

Hello,

How can you pull out the fuse?

i was about to break my nails and it didn't go out. also i think i don't have plastic fuse plucker in my corolla 2005 or may be i didn't notice it at night??

I'll try again tomorrow at day light.

Seth says:

The fuse plucker is white in color. That fuse panel below the steering column was SO hard to get to. I tried to lie down, but my head kept hitting the brake pedal and my back was arched on the driver side foot rail... I changed the fuse an hour ago and my back is still hurting. I hope i won't have to replace one of those fuses for a while.

Justin says:

Which fuse is for the side mirrors if you know?

Mark says:

thanks for posting info about the fuse box; I would have never found it. What a colossal pain it is getting to that thing!! It's almost as if the manufacturer doesn't want you to fix the simplest thing like a blown fuse!

Albert says:

Glad to help Mark - thanks for commenting!

Cecelia says:

Started my car and all at once, the windows stopped working, the A/C quit (and it's going to be 98 today), no speedometer or mileage, hazard works, but signals don't. My boss is crawling under the steering wheel panel as "we speak". Several fuses blown at once?! Or electrical?

Albert says:

Hi Cecelia - thanks for commenting. Those are probably all the same fuse.

JIM says:

Where is the fuse for the cruise control??

Albert says:

Hi Jim, Not sure, my Corolla doesn't have cruise control. It should say on the back of the fuse panel cover.

empire falls says:

my driver side low beam was out

i replaced it will a new bulb,

i had a hard time getting it in,

after one day it was out

i tried 3 new light bulbs,none

the other low beam works fine, did

i blow a fuse, or something worse??

verdi says:

the fuse box under the hood.....how do i get the lid off???

it is not easy as it sounds

Sam says:

My radio and side mirrors have stopped working. Do you think it's a fuse problem? If yes, which fuse (I couldn't figure it out from the fuse box covers)?

Jim says:

Wow this information helped a TON when my 15A (cig lighter/radio/clock/pwr mirrors) fuse blew. I do agree the box under the driver's side is a pain to get to! Thanks so much for the pictures, they helped a lot!

Albert says:

Hi Jim, glad you found this page helpful and thanks for commenting!

Thomas says:

I blew both cig fuses after following your instructions I replaced one. The cig lighter under the center console is blown too, but I couldnt figure out which fuse that one is. Can you help? Thanks Thomas

Ted says:

After I installed HID conversion kit with relay on the 2004 Corolla, right light started flickering after I start the car. I was recommended to change the left headlight fuse to 15amp, anyone know which fuse box I should look for or have a better solution to the HID problem I experienced? DRL is on since I don't know where or how to disable it.

tish says:

does anyone know how to get to the seat belt light fuse? (in the 2005 corolla)

Daniel says:

Could not have done this without the information. Changed the cig/radio fuse that blew. Pain in the butt but did it.

Thanks a million

Daniel Quijano says:

I recently had my '05 Corolla rekeyed, but it took so long that my battery went dead. When I tried to jump it, the were a few sparks. The car then became unresponsive. I thought it might just have drained the batt completely. I replaced it now and its still unresponsive. Does anyone know which one the ignition fuse is.

Albert says:

Hi Daniel, If there is an ignition fuse, it will be a big one.

Another sign of a dead or undercharged battery is a clicking noise when you try to turn it over. Did you hear any of that?

garret says:

the noise you hear is from the power wire next to the rca wire you need to run them on opposite sides of the car or get shielded wire i hope this helps

Les says:

The A/C stopped working in my '05 Corolla and I looked at the engine to see if the compressor was spinning, sure enough, it isn't. Is it possible that this could all be from a blown fuse? If so, which fuse and is it located under the steering wheel? Please Help. Thanks.

Val says:

Thanks for the helpful info. I had to replace the fuse for the cig/radio/clock. While I still had to become a pretzel to change it out, it made it so much easier knowing what I was in for and what to look for!

Lana says:

My windshield wiper fluid pump recently stopped pumping. There is no audible sound and I'm hoping it's just a fuse. Can you tell which box houses this fuse??? Thanks, in advance.

Albert says:

Looks like it might be under the steering wheel Lana.

alex love says:

the reason why the fuse box is so hard to get to in your car is because Toyota's are Japanese made cars. therefore, when being designed to original production the drivers side is on the right hand side of the car.

with right hand drive corolla's the fusebox can be accessed very easy buy opening the glovebox (passenger side "left") and located the fusebox door just to the left of the center of the glovebox opening, its that easy.

DJ Deprey says:

My wifes just stop working too. i checked the fuse and it was fine. where do i go now???

chris says:

could i get a pic showing where power window wires go into the junction box

lynette.delane says:

Hey All,

My radio fuse blew after an ipod charger removed the cigarette lighter sleeve & the glass fuse popped out (no instructions for that one in the book ;).

Just to make you feel better, it's not at all 'that easy' on a RHS drive vehicle. The glovebox actually has to be removed as the gap at the back is barely big enough to fit your hand.

Tip for new comers, get the 'fuse picker' and the spare fuse out of the engine fuse compartment first. For Aussies, the page references are 257 for instructions, 239 for fuse locations and 285 for fuse controls.

Good luck and don't try to do it at night or you'll need a really god flashlight.

jp says:

could you please post a photo of where to find the box under the steering wheel? would also be great if you could post instructions on how to pull of the cover as well as the cover for the box under the hood, as I had trouble getting it off too.

jobu says:

My 2007 corolla wont start but the lights work and on jump no turnover.

ks says:

I am having the same problem with my 2005 Corolla. Did you find out what is causing the problem?

Mary says:

My a/c stopped working on the hottest day of the year. I thought it was the freon but now I am told that the a/c compressor is gone. Could this be a blown fuse? I am female and the mechanics do try. Please answer me soon. I cannot drive this car without the a/c working.

Albert says:

Hi Mary, Its possible it could be a blown fuse. Can you take it to another mechanic for a second opinion?

Jesse says:

Hi my fuel and temp gauge stopped working, can you tell me where they are?? I have a 1987 toyota corona XL ST150

adrian says:

2005-Toyota Corolla CE:

My cigarette lighters went out one day when I was driving and as soon as that happened the radio went out and the clock radio along with all the dials, except my AC/Temperature knob lights. I immediately tested all my fuses. They were fine. ALL were good. I had no idea at the time that there was a 2nd fuse just to the left and UNDER the steering column.

Since I was under the assumption that all fuses were working and AC/Temperature knobs were functioning on and off, if i turned the vent selection knob to the right it would go from being half lit to all three knobs lit, I thought it had to be a wiring problem. I took it to an electrician and they wanted $310 to fix it. I figured I would research it myself and learn how to fix it anyways so i didn't pay to have it done. That was in April of 2009. Today my driver and passenger side mirrors went out so I went to check the fuses again, they ALL WORKED...then it hit me there has to be another fuse box.

Googled my problem and this site came up saw there were people having the same problem as me, went under the steering column and within 4 minutes found my fuses, tested it BAM...$3.29 for TWO (2) SMart Glow 15A Fuses at O'Riely.

INSTANTLY fixed my problem. Saved me well over $305!!! I am glad i didn't pay that much money to have a FUSE CHANGED!!!

The Smart Glow Fuses are made by LITTELFUSE and they advertise that when the fuse has gone out it will light up, so long as the car is turned on. Has anyone used these before? I have a tester, but thought it would be neat to instantly know, especially since it's a paid to test the fuses in the box under the steering column.

Thank you NeoCarz.com!!!

sharif says:

hi i have a automatic toyota crolla 2005, its Acceleration is Electronic, at the time of driving when i push the acceleration engine is not starting immediate Acceleration, what do you thing about this problem...

Albert says:

It might be the oxygen sensor. I had a similar problem with a 2003 Ford Taurus a number of years back. When I pushed on the accelerator, it would not accelerate, when I pushed it further, the car would stagger a little.

Have you had anyone inspect the car? I think the Corolla might have a computer interface that can be used to diagnose the problem, but then again I am not a mechanic. :-)

Good luck, and let us know what the result is.

Guillermo says:

does any one knows where is the main relay my car start good in the morning but if I turn it off it crank but wont start could any one help

Vince says:

Holy Crap! What were they thinking when they put this fuse box down here? I'm about 6' 2" tall and I'm not really scarred of small places, but this small amount of space terrifies the hell out of me. Maybe it's just because I'm upside down though.

Albert says:

Vince, I agree. I am 6'2" too and its about as awkward as it gets to access that panel.

jmay1972 says:

Guys, I have 2006 Toyota Corolla. I still cannot find the above fuse box (my cig and radio don't work), does any one have a zoomed out picture of under the steering wheel that shows exactly which box with a lid to pop out to access the fuse box? I tried the above picture, but could not locate it under the steering wheel, it is so frustrating. It is easy to see the fuse box on 2001 Toyota Sienna van, but this one is a challenge.

Thanks. John

Leslie says:

Hi! I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla LE and my brake light's don't work for Braking but they work for Reverse. I located the fuse box with the help of this website but how do you take the Fuse OUT? Do I use a flathead Screwdriver to pop it out? or What? and which Fuse am I pulling out, the Brake fuse or the Rear? Please help!!!!

P.S - I got pulled over this morning by a Cop who said my light's were not working and I changed the brake lights over 3 weeks ago and the Maintence light didn't even come on in my dashboard to tell me that my Light's were AGAIN not working.

Thank you for your help, Leslie

Albert says:

I think there is a fuse puller tool in the fuse box under the hood. Its looks kind of like a pair of tweezers.

Diana says:

My headlights and tail lights are not working on my 2003 Toyota corolla. Where can I find the fuse for that?

Anonymous says:

mconalty says:

Hi, I have found the fuse box behind the glove compartment, but can't get the cover off the fusebox - is there a button or a catch somewhere on it? I don't want to break it by forcing it off..

Albert says:

Mine wasn't behind the glove compartment, so I'm not sure. I seem to remember mine having a clip on the side. Does yours have one?

Rick in AZ says:

I popped the drivers seat out a job but alot easier to get to it!! what was Toyota thinking?

Jdy says:

Albert says:

Hi Nazar, I don't know if that can be changed. I think its a safety feature.

Hi there, I have a 2004 corolla verso and have a problem on starting. When I press the ignition button, dashboard lights flash once but then go out. Car won't start. AC, Radio central locking doesn't work, Indicators and lights do. Check all fuses except main 100 and 50 amp under the windscreen wipers - please help, thanks rob

Albert says:

Sounds like the battery does not have enough of a charge. Have you tried jumping it?

ChrisM says:

I have a 2005 corolla and want to use an inverter for my laptop while on the road. I know the cigarette lighter fuse is a 15 amp but is it possible to put a 20 amp fuse in? Will this work or the lighter fuse is only made for 15 amp's?

Ade says:

2005 Toyota Corolla Ascent Hatch. Found the fusebox by taking out the glovebox, (just one screw). It's directly above the cavity. Black cover that you simply pull off.

Not sure if models with passenger airbag would have the same location.

Mirrors and radio were on the same fuse. (15 amp). 30 minutes to find it! Thanks for this forum, it gave me all the right places to look.

Lui says:

hey guys, is there a fuse for the oxygen sensors? if so, which fuse is it? thaks

Albert says:

I'm not sure if there is one for the oxygen sensor, but if your oxygen senor isn't working, it would probably be obvious.
